IRBLleida’s science workshops are getting underway to introduce Year 1 secondary school pupils to biomedical research
Up to 840 students from the Lleida region will take part this academic year in a practical activity to discover how research helps improve people’s health
The Lleida Institute for Biomedical Research (IRBLleida) has launched a new series of science workshops this October, aimed at Year 7 pupils from schools in the Lleida region. The initiative forms part of IRBLleida's science education programme, which aims to introduce young people to biomedical research and encourage scientific careers amongst pupils.
During the academic year, up to 840 pupils will take part in the 14 scheduled workshops, which are held at the institute's premises thanks to the support of the "la Caixa" Foundation and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT).
Under the title 'Exploring the World of Research', participants gain a hands-on understanding of what biomedical research is and the impact it has on society. Through interactive activities, pupils learn about the main areas of work at IRBLleida, are introduced to the basic concepts of genetics, and experience how science can help tackle current health-related challenges.
The workshop includes activities designed to help participants understand the flow of genetic information within cells and its link to certain diseases, as well as an experimental introduction to biotechnology through a simulation of the manufacture of dressings made from biomaterials. In this way, participants have the opportunity to experience first-hand what research teams do in their day-to-day work.
Through this initiative, IRBLleida reaffirms its commitment to scientific outreach and the promotion of scientific culture amongst young people, helping to make biomedical research more accessible and to spark an interest in science and innovation.
