Wala's Round-Up Campaign raises more than €5,500 to support environmental health research at IRBLleida
The funds will support a cross-cutting research programme aimed at understanding and addressing the health impacts of complex environmental exposures and climate change
Throughout June, sports retailer Wala, in collaboration with Worldcoo, ran a Round-Up Campaign to raise funds for the Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRBLleida). Thanks to donations from its customers, the campaign raised €5,589, which will support the development of a cross-cutting research programme focused on understanding and addressing the health impacts of complex environmental exposures and climate change, while promoting precision medicine strategies for disease prevention and risk mitigation.
The Round-Up initiative, managed through Worldcoo, enables customers to donate the remaining cents of their purchase when paying by card or mobile phone. Since its launch in 2018, the initiative has helped fund 1,280 projects carried out by 1,247 organisations worldwide.
In the case of the initiative promoted by Wala, the donation will contribute to funding this new cross-cutting research programme at IRBLleida. Climate change and the increasing frequency of heatwaves are contributing to higher mortality rates and a greater incidence of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, particularly among vulnerable populations. At the same time, the emergence of new infectious diseases linked to environmental factors highlights the need for new prevention and research strategies to strengthen healthcare systems.
