José Manuel Porcel, selected by the Chinese government as one of the leading international experts in biomedical research

He will take part in the SAFEA programme, which is reserved for world-leading experts in the fields of science and academia

José Manuel Porcel, Professor of Medicine at the University of Lleida (UdL), Head of the Department of Internal Medicine at Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital (HUAV), coordinator of the Pleural Medicine and Clinical Ultrasound Unit and head of the Research group of Cancer Biomarkers (GReBiC) at the Institute for Biomedical Research (IRBLleida), has been selected to participate in a Chinese programme aimed at attracting professionals of recognised scientific and academic standing to promote biomedical research, innovation and international collaboration.

Specifically, Porcel will collaborate on the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) Individual Programme, in Category S (Senior Talent), the highest category for high-level foreign experts. The SAFEA programme is an initiative of the Government of the People's Republic of China, and Category S is reserved for experts with a well-established and internationally recognised track record in their respective fields of expertise.

As part of this appointment, Porcel will collaborate with the China-Japan Friendship Hospital in Beijing, one of the country's leading medical and research centres, on scientific advisory work, the development of research projects, the training of professionals and the promotion of international collaborations in the field of pleural diseases and respiratory medicine.

Dr Porcel is one of the leading international authorities on the study of pleural effusions. He has published over 400 scientific articles, is the principal investigator or co-principal investigator on numerous competitive projects funded by the Carlos III Health Institute, and holds editorial leadership positions as Section Editor of the European Respiratory Journal and Associate Editor of ERJ Open Research. According to Expertscape, he is considered the world's leading expert in the fields of "Pleural Effusion" and "Hydrothorax", whilst ScholarGPS ranks him among the world's most influential researchers in pleural diseases.

This recognition reinforces the international standing of HUAV, IRBLleida and the UdL and promotes the establishment of new scientific collaborations between Catalonia and China.
