Clinical neurosciences

Stroke is a common disease that is considered the leading cause of disability in adults and the second leading cause of dementia in Spain. It is also the leading cause of death in women and the second leading cause of death in men. Worldwide, every two years someone suffers an ischaemic stroke.

The Clinical Neurosciences research group at IRBLleida has the ultimate goal of defining the pathophysiological mechanisms of the different types of cerebrovascular disease (ischaemic, haemorrhagic, paediatric), describing new diagnostic approaches and defining prognostic variables. All these approaches are focused on improving the quality of life of patients and improving their clinical management.

The group's lines of research are as follows:

  • Identification of injury and recovery: biomarkers.
  • Acute phase treatment: protective mechanisms.
  • Brain repair: identification of mechanisms and biomarkers.
  • Brain recovery: cognitive and affective alteration, measurement of outputs reported by patients.
  • Secondary prevention.
