Neurosurgery and traumatology professionals are trained in Lleida in the use of the exoscope, a more precise technique for performing operations.

The CREBA centre is hosting this top-level training course for the first time

Today, 8 October, the CREBA (Centre for Applied Biomedical Research) is hosting its first neurosurgery course to introduce minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques to professionals in this field. The course focuses on the use of the exoscope, a three-dimensional 4K digital visualisation system. Led by professionals from the Neurosurgery Department at Arnau de Vilanova University Hospital in Lleida (HUAV), the course was attended by eight professionals from hospitals across Spain, as well as international professionals from Cuba and Kuwait.

'This line of training was initiated by the traumatologists of the HUAV Spine Unit in 2018 and has been maintained. Now, the neurosurgery team's initiative represents a new enrichment for our centre,' said CREBA director Dolores Garcia Olmo.

The HUAV neurosurgery team, led by surgeons Milton Martínez Madrigal and Víctor Martínez Alcañiz, explain that 'the exoscope allows us to have, in a single device, microscope and real-time views, with a very high level of detail and in three dimensions'. This technological innovation allows advanced procedures to be performed in various specialities, not just neurosurgery.

The professionals of the Neurosurgery Service want to promote this training on an annual basis to guarantee the importance of teaching led from Lleida.

The great advantage is that the surgeon does not have to use a microscope and can operate with their head raised, looking at a screen where the image is displayed in three dimensions. Professionals have a better view of the area being operated on and the depth of field, which improves technique and allows professionals to be more precise. In addition, this technique allows for first-rate surgical teaching, which is essential for a hospital that is a leader in teaching and research.

During 2024, CREBA hosted 22 specialised healthcare training courses, with more than 400 students.

The course was attended by eight professionals from hospitals in different parts of Spain, Cuba and Kuwait
