CREBA is celebrating its tenth anniversary, having trained more than 3,400 professionals and supported 26 biomedical research projects

The scientific infrastructure at IRBLleida has organised 217 specialist courses, supported 26 research projects and introduced nearly 1,700 students to science

The Centre for Applied Biomedical Science and Experimental Research (CREBA), a scientific facility of the Lleida Institute of Biomedical Research (IRBLleida) established in partnership with the Lleida Provincial Council, is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Since it opened in Torrelameu, the centre has established itself as a leading scientific and technical facility dedicated to translational research, specialised training, clinical simulation and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Over the past decade, it has supported the development of biomedical research projects, training activities for healthcare professionals and initiatives to bring science closer to the public, thereby contributing to the transfer of scientific knowledge into clinical practice.

Over the past decade, CREBA has organised 217 specialist courses, attended by 3,402 healthcare professionals from various centres and countries. The areas with the highest level of activity have been gastrointestinal endoscopy, spinal surgery, laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery, nephrology, abdominal wall surgery, gynaecology and urology.

Translational biomedical research has been one of the centre's main areas of activity. Over the years, CREBA has provided technical support to 26 research projects carried out primarily using porcine models by teams from hospitals, research centres and companies in the biomedical sector. The similarities between the pig model and humans have made it possible to carry out studies with high clinical applicability, facilitating the translation of scientific advances into clinical practice and resulting in better patient care. This research has driven the development of new surgical techniques, medical devices and therapeutic strategies, whilst also expanding our understanding of how the body functions and of various physiological processes.

Over the past ten years, CREBA has become a leading centre for applied research, specialised training and the dissemination of scientific knowledge. Its facilities, equipped with technology for surgery and other experimental models, simulation and teaching, have hosted high-level research projects and training activities. Furthermore, the centre has carried out outstanding work in popularising science and promoting scientific careers through 93 educational workshops attended by 1,696 students, with the aim of bringing biomedical research closer to young people and raising awareness of the importance of science for the progress of society.

Established to meet the need for specialised facilities for biomedical research, clinical simulation and the continuing professional development of healthcare professionals, CREBA has, over the past ten years, become a key infrastructure for research and innovation in healthcare. Its work has helped to strengthen Lleida's position as a leading centre for biomedical research, and the centre remains firmly committed to scientific excellence, innovation and the training of professionals in the years to come.
