New biomarkers for the early detection of multiple sclerosis

The Neuroimmunology Group is currently studying the possible causes of multiple sclerosis (MS) and is doing research to discover new biomarkers that help doctors detect the illness early. Specifically, researchers study the involvement of mitochondria (organs found in cells, which have an important role in the aging process) and oxidative stress as important components in the origin and development of the disease.

MS is an inflammatory, demyelinating disease (which destroys myelin, a substance that protects neurons) as well as an autoimmune disease, which affects the central nervous system.
